As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in the fabric of academic life, universities, researchers, and students are being forced to confront a rapidly changing landscape of ethical expectations. Once straightforward questions about authorship, originality, and academic honesty now require new rules, new vigilance, and new ways of thinking. The rise of generative AI tools has opened remarkable opportunities for research innovation but it has also exposed the academy to unprecedented risks.
The Evolving Nature of Plagiarism
Plagiarism was once defined primarily as copying another person’s words without acknowledgement (Gregory & Leeman, 2021; Hutson, 2024). Today, the boundaries have blurred. Generative AI tools can produce essays, code, literature reviews, or lab reports that do not directly copy any existing text. The output is “original” in a technical sense but not in an intellectual one.
This raises fundamental questions:
- If AI produced the work, who is the author?
- Can a student claim originality if the content was generated, not constructed through learning?
- How should institutions differentiate between legitimate AI support and academic misconduct?
As a result, many universities are updating plagiarism policies to account for AI-generated writing, emphasising that academic integrity is not solely about text matching, but is about transparency, intellectual ownership, and learning purpose(Tarisayi, 2023).
AI-Assisted Writing: Tool or Shortcut?
AI writing tools can help students refine ideas, check grammar, and learn structure. For researchers, AI can summarise literature, generate search terms, or help organise drafts functions that can enhance academic productivity when used responsibly.
However, the temptation to over-rely on AI is strong.
Dr Muringa cautions that,
“When students use AI to produce entire assignments, critical thinking, academic argumentation, and subject mastery disappear. When researchers use AI to generate literature reviews or analysis, the risks extend to flawed interpretations, hallucinated references, ethical breaches, and compromised research credibility.”
The challenge is therefore not AI itself, but the degree and transparency of its use. Academic work should reflect human judgement something no AI can replace.
Ethical Review Boards Under Pressure
Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) and ethics committees now face new dilemmas. AI tools raise questions about:
- data privacy and consent,
- the ethics of using AI-generated participants or synthetic data,
- intellectual property in machine-generated content,
- authorship attribution when AI contributes to research outputs, and
- bias embedded in AI systems.
Ethics committees must therefore evolve to ensure that research involving AI upholds fairness, accuracy, and participant protection. This requires updated guidelines, training for reviewers, and clear policies on the responsible use of AI in all stages of the research process.
Academic Honesty: A Shared Responsibility
As the academic world transitions into an AI-enhanced era, cultivating a culture of honesty becomes even more essential. Dr Gilbert notes that “integrity is no longer simply about avoiding misconduct, it is about consciously engaging with technology in a way that preserves the purpose of education and research.”
This requires:
- Clear institutional policies that define acceptable AI use.
- Transparent disclosure guidelines for students and scholars.
- Pedagogical redesign, ensuring assessments measure thinking rather than tool use.
- Capacity-building for staff, enabling lecturers and supervisors to detect and manage AI misuse.
- Ethical literacy for students, so they understand how AI can aid learning without undermining it.
Additionally, Dr Gilbert emphasises that “ultimately, the academic community must embrace AI as a valuable ally while safeguarding the principles that give scholarship its meaning.”
Integrity in a New Era
Artificial intelligence is not the first disruptive technology to challenge academic norms, but its scale and speed are unprecedented. The future of academic integrity will depend on how institutions, scholars, and students respond by balancing innovation with responsibility.
AI can strengthen research, accelerate learning, and enhance creativity. But it can also erode trust if used carelessly. As the academic world adapts, one truth remains constant: integrity must remain at the heart of scholarship, no matter how powerful our tools become.
