M&G Research stands firm against GBV in South Africa

At M&G Research, we call for action as we believe that data isn’t just about numbers. It’s about revealing the realities that demand change. Today, we amplify our commitment to advocating against the pervasive scourge of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) that continues to fester in our communities.

The current statistics are extremely high and are unacceptable as South Africa has one of the highest rates of rape and sexual violence in the world. According to Statistics South Africa’s Governance, Public Safety, and Justice Survey (GPSJS) 2023/24, a significant NUMBER of women report experiencing physical or sexual violence.

Young children are particularly vulnerable to sexual violence as reports have indicated that a large percentage of sexual offenses are against minors. The number of women killed by their intimate partners is alarmingly high, exceeding the global averages. There is a present significant challenge of reporting these cases as many incidents go unreported due to fear, stigma, and a lack of trust in the justice system.

At M&G, we understand that these numbers are not just figures, but they represent shattered lives, broken families, and a society grappling with a deep-seated crisis.

M&G Research believes that businesses have a responsibility to contribute to a safer society. We encourage other corporations to join us in this fight and stand in solidarity with the victims and survivors of GBV. We call on government, law enforcement, and civil society to strengthen the justice system to ensure perpetrators are held accountable. The government should invest in prevention programs that address the root causes of violence, provide comprehensive support services for survivors, and increase the education of the public, specifically men, about the importance of protecting women and children, consent, and healthy relationships.

Let us turn these devastating statistics into a catalyst for change. Together, we can create a South Africa where every individual feels safe and protected.
